Although former Journey frontman Steve Perry 's return to the stage recently -- sitting in a few times with alternative rock band Eels -- may not signal a full-time return to action for the singer, it has made at least one former bandmate happy.

Longtime Journey keyboard player and songwriter Jonathan Cain , in an interview with journalist  Michael Cavacini, says the stage is where Perry belongs.

"I think it's great that he broke the ice and went out with the Eels and performed," says the keyboardist. "He deserves to be out there onstage… I could never understand why he seemed to be in recluse mode, hiding away somewhere. When you're Steve Perry, one of the greatest voices of all time, you should be on a stage where you belong.  So good for him."

Although Cain didn't address the possibility of Journey ever reuniting with Perry, he did say that it's hard for the band to capture the old magic with new material in Perry's absence. "Unless we're able to go back in and give people what they want, it doesn't make sense," Cain says of the possibility of recording new Journey music with current singer Arnel Pineda . "They want the old stuff -- and they already have the old stuff… Perry had that pop sensibility. I followed his lead, he followed mine, and Neal [ Schon ] added the rock edge to it. With Perry missing from the mix, do you ever get back to it? I don't know."
