Major oil pipeline proposed through Sioux Falls area

Undated (KELO-AM) The 1,100 mile underground oil pipeline across South Dakota and Iowa proposed by a Texas based company would go through the Sioux Falls area.

South Dakota Public Utitlities Commission Chairman Gary Hanson says the tenative map from Energy Transfer Partners shows the pipeline crossing the state diagonally from near Mobridge down to near Tea, Harrisburg and Hartford. Hanson says he can't see how the company could build the pipeline near so many population centers as indicated on the map. He says the company has yet to officially file for permits.

The pipeline would move 320,000 barrels a day from the booming North Dakota oil patch to terminals in Illinois.

A totally separate project, the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline would move energy from Canada to the Gulf Coast through parts of South Dakota, but the process has been snagged by legal action in Nebraska.
