For most of The Beatles ' career, the main audio format in which the band's albums were released was mono vinyl. Now, remastered mono vinyl editions of the Fab Four's first nine U.K. albums will be released together in a new 14-LP box set that will arrive in U.S. stores on September 9.
The Beatles in Mono will include the group's U.K. LPs spanning from 1963's Please Please Me through 1968's self-titled two-disc set, aka The White Album , as well as the 1967 U.S. release Magical Mystery Tour and a three-LP compilation of non-album tracks called Mono Masters . All of the discs in the package are high-quality 180-gram vinyl.
The box set also will feature a 108-page hard-cover book that contains new essays; rare studio photos; archival images, documents and articles; and an in-depth history of how the albums were mastered. All of the albums will come housed in replicated versions of the original LPs' sleeves and packaging.
The Beatles in Mono vinyl recordings were remastered at London's Abbey Road Studios using the original quarter-inch master tapes and without the use of any digital technology. It's worth noting that a CD version of The Beatles in Mono was issued in 2009, although the mastering process for that collection differed from the one used while putting together the new vinyl set.
Each album featured in The Beatles in Mono box set also will be available for purchase individually.
