After Midnight , the Broadway musical that has been showcasing a rotating set of well-known guest singers, will have it's final performance on Sunday, June 29, the last date scheduled to feature current star Patti LaBelle . The show's early closing means that announced guest runs by Gladys Knight and Natalie Cole won't take place.
According to The New York Times , producers were hoping that a Tony Award win earlier this month would boost the show's fortunes, but another show beat it out for Best Musical. The show's choreographer did win a Tony for Best Choreography.
LaBelle, Knight and another of the production's guest stars, Fantasia , sang music from the show at the Tony ceremony at Radio City Music Hall in New York, and host Hugh Jackman joined the show's tap dancers on stage. The musical, which opened in October 2013, pays homage to Duke Ellington 's orchestra that played at the famous Cotton Club nightclub in Harlem in the 1920s. Among the other singers who had featured guest runs in the show were including Tony Braxton and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds .
