Undated (KELO-AM) A group of state lawmakers will conduct a summer study of the condition of roads and bridges in South Dakota to determine how much new money will be needed to maintain them in the years ahead.

State Senator Mike Vehle, a Mitchell Republican, will head up the special group. He says that if maintenance funding stays at current levels, in ten years about 27% of South Dakota roads will be poor condition.

Federal stimulus money has helped us in the past, he says, but that has gone away. Once the lawmakers determine the extent of the need, then they will look at options to raise more money, including a hike in the gas tax.
