OMAHA, Neb. (KWSN)– Augustana College senior third baseman Tony Viger has been named a semifinalist for the 2014 Tino Martinez Award, D2baseballnews.com and College Baseball Lineup announced on Friday.
The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, Olympian and MLB All-Star Tino Martinez. Viger, was recently named the NSIC's Player of the Year as well as the Central Region Player of the Year by Daktronics and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
The Sioux Falls , S.D. native led the NSIC in multiple categories this season including runs scored (63), hits (88), RBI (61), doubles (28) and total bases (150). Viger's 28 doubles also ranks first in all of NCAA Division II.
Viger entered yesterday's NCAA Tournament game against Arkansas Tech batting .423 through 54 games on the season. Entering the NCAA Tournament, Viger ranked in the top 15 nationally in batting average (14th), runs (fifth), hits (third), doubles (first), RBI (eighth), slugging percentage (eighth), and total bases (fourth).
Viger is one of 40 Division II players to be named a semifinalist for the Tino Martinez Award. The winner of the 2014 Tino Martinez Award will be named on Monday, June 2, following the Division II Championships which will be held May 24-31 in Cary, N.C.
The finalists will be revealed prior to the beginning of the NCAA Championships. Augustana will play Arkansas-Monticello in an elimination game at 12 p.m. today at Tech Field in Russellville, Ark.
