SDSU Track & Field: Jackrabbit trio ready for Regionals

Brookings, SD (KWSN) - Shelby Assmus, Kali Olson and Mary Wirth are competing this week at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.

Assmus enters the shot put event with the 47th-best mark in the field. She a tallied distance of 48 feet, 4 inches en route to a second-place finish at the 2014 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships. This is the first regional meet for Assmus. Currently, her mark ranks third all-time at SDSU. The shot put event is slated for 6:30 p.m. on May 29.

The shot put event consists of four flights with the top-16 throwers receiving three more throws. The top-12 marks advance to the NCAA Championships.

In the high jump, Wirth holds the 10th-best height in the field (5-10 3/4) and Olson ranks 43rd (5-8 3/4). Wirth set her personal-best height in the outdoor season-opener at the Arizona State University Invite. Olson cleared her personal-best height of 5-8 3/4 at the 2014 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The high jump event takes place May 31 at 6 p.m.

Wirth won her third outdoor conference high jump title two weeks ago at the conference meet and Olson placed fourth. Wirth currently holds the outdoor high jump school record and Olson is tied for second.

This is the third time Wirth has qualified for the regional meet and the second for Olson. Wirth placed 17th (5-7) in 2011 and 32nd (5-7 1/4) in 2012. Last year, Olson took 42nd with her height of 5-5.

The high jump event has two high jump pits jumping at the same time. The top-12 heights will advance to the NCAA Championships.

The NCAA Division I Track & Field National Championships are held June 11-14, on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore.
