NEW ORLEANS, LA (KWSN) – Carrying momentum from the a top-20 finish at the NCAA Championships in 2013, the University of Sioux Falls men’s cross country team was slotted 17th in the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason coaches’ poll released Wednesday afternoon. The No. 17 billing is the highest ever achieved by men's cross country program at USF.
The Cougars return all six runners from last season’s team that turned in an 18th-place team finish. Headlining the deep, seasoned squad are All-Americans Bobby Brockmueller and Billy Brockmueller who look to repeat their top-40 national finish after collecting their first NCAA All-American honors one season ago.
Matthew Horan and Ethan Tabbert return for their junior seasons after collecting All-NSIC honors with third and 20th, respectively, at the NSIC Championships.
Two-time defending champion Adams State was slotted first after collecting all eight first-place votes. The Cougars are one of four teams ranked from the Central Region – USF placed fifth at the 2013 NCAA Central Region Championships to secure the final qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships – that appear in the preseason edition of the top 25 rankings.
The men’s team was selected to finish second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference by the league coaches and debuted in the 2014 USTFCCCA Central Region Rankings yesterday in the No. 3 spot.
The Cougars open their 2014 campaign at the Augustana Twilight Invitational on Friday, Sept. 5 at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls, S.D. The women’s three-mile race is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. and the men will follow with a four-mile contest at 9 p.m
