SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — After an honorable 25-year career with the City of Sioux Falls, Police Chief Matt Burns announced his plans to retire on July 23, 2021.
“I have been privileged to serve the Sioux Falls community alongside the incredible men and women of the Sioux Falls Police Department,” Chief Burns said. “I am so proud of them and what we have been able to accomplish together in working to keep our city safe and prosperous. Through times of success and challenge they are the best in the business, and leading them has been a high honor.”
Chief Burns started his law enforcement career with the Sioux Falls Police Department (SFPD) as a patrol officer in 1996. In his SFPD career he has worked as a field training officer, SWAT team member, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, and assistant chief. He was appointed Chief of Police in October 2015. Chief Burns is a veteran of the United States Air Force and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from the University of Central Missouri. He completed his professional internship at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga.
During his tenure with the City of Sioux Falls, Burns has successfully led several key initiatives, most recently including the Police Department’s efforts to promote the new Public Safety Training Center, its funding, and design. He has spearheaded the effort to collaborate with the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office and Law Enforcement Training to host remote Basic Certification Academy classes at the SFPD. Burns also has led the effort for the southwest report-to-work location, which opened in spring 2021 and is the model for future SFPD policing operations.
“I’m beyond grateful for Chief Burns’ leadership and his 25 years serving our community. Behind the uniform is a man of incredible integrity and character and one that I will miss serving alongside tremendously. He’s led our city through so much in recent years and has been one of my most trusted allies in ensuring we are both a welcoming and safe community. A true hero, I wish him nothing but the best in his next chapter,” said Mayor Paul TenHaken.
The Mayor will commence the search for a new Police Chief immediately. This will include establishing the interview panel, which will include community members. Additionally, the Mayor intends to incorporate the ability for the community to engage with the finalists prior to the Mayor’s appointment. More details to follow.
