SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls Police release the ages and genders of the stabbing victims that triggered Thursday’s standoff, then police shooting the suspect.
The stabbing victims are a six-year-old boy, a 33-year-old woman, and a 70-year-old man.
Police Lt. Terrance Matia says the boy’s throat was slit but doing well, the woman is up and about but still in critical condition, but the man is severely wounded.
Police also said the underlying event was a domestic violence situation.
The dead suspect is Elwood Dwyer, 52. Police said he was known to them through their records and had previously been charged with assault on a law enforcement officer.
Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum says there was one Sioux Falls Police Officer and one Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Deputy involved in the shooting. Thum says they are on paid administrative leave. The South Dakota Divison of Criminal Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
Authorities also said that law enforcement on the scene did attempt to use less lethal means to end the standoff with Dwyer but were unsuccessful. Thursday, Officer Sam Clemens said that Dwyer charged officers while carrying a weapon. Family members had accused law enforcement in other media Thursday that they law enforcement did not attempt non-lethal means to end the incident. Police also said they were in contact with Dwyer’s family members during the standoff.
