YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) — Despite the shot of cold air and some snow this week, the outlook for most of December is continued above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation.
Dennis Todey with the Midwest Climate Hub in Ames Iowa said that’s because of the jet stream moving far north of the region. He added areas like northern Minnesota and northern North Dakota could see some winter storms, but that sort of activity hasn’t been seen recently in the Sioux Falls area.
Todey said any rain or snow now won’t do much for ongoing drought conditions, and dry conditions are expected to hang on for most of the winter.
The Climate Prediction Center has issued a La Niña advisory until late spring.
