SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — A year ago today, forecasters were warning us of a major wind storm that was headed our way–a derecho. It was the first of two derechos to hit the state last year. Meteorologist Phillip Schumacher of the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says it’s hard to tell if they’re becoming more common compared to the past.
Farm bins and outbuildings were especially hard hit, making the already busy planting season even more challenging. The storm interrupted planting activities, and forced farmers to clean debris from their fields before they could resume planting. South Dakota Farm Services Executive Director Steve says some of the damage is still visible today.
Thankfully, there’s nothing like that in our forecast for today.
