SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed by fentanyl. Angela Kennecke’s daughter Emily was among those victims six years ago.
Following her daughter’s death, Kenneck founded Emily’s Hope, a non-profit agency that warns people of the dangers of fentanyl, and tries to protect those with addiction problems from becoming a victim. Tuesday is national Fentanyl Awareness Day. Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum says the occasion provides a great reminder of the importance of parents talking to their children.
Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead says fentanyl is pouring over the border at a record pace, with deadly results.
One of those victims was Jenny and Jim Orr’s 15-year old daughter Kelsey, who died just before Christmas.
The Orrs also urged parents to talk to their children about the dangers of fentanyl, saying, “You only get one chance.” Fentanyl is now the number one killer of people between the ages of 14 and 45.
