SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — It’s an all-out effort to reduce infant mortality in South Dakota. The Avera Research Institute has received a five-year, 5.4-million dollar grant through the Healthy Start Initiative. Project Director Dr. Lacey McCormack calls it a multi-pronged approach that goes beyond clinical treatment.
Dr. McCormack says the target area includes 52 counties, reaching the entire footprint of Avera Health in South Dakota. Rural areas present a difficult challenge, but the research team will also work on problems in urban areas.
McCormack says something as simple as a gas card can make a big difference for expectant mothers and their unborn children.
The project will provide services that encourage healthy living during pregnancy and continued support after childbirth. That will include things like healthy food through a partnership with Feeding South Dakota, rewards for healthy lifestyle choices and transportation to Dr.’s appointments.
