BLOOD RUN NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK (KELO.com) — You could never tell by looking at it today, but a spot straddling the Iowa/South Dakota border once was home to one of the largest population centers in North America.
South Dakota purchased land and created Good Earth State park southeast of Sioux Falls. The state of Iowa hasn’t moved forward with plans to develop its part of the Blood Run National Historic Landmark. That will change if Gerry Schnepf of the Iowa National Heritage Foundation has his way.
At one time the site housed up to six-thousand people. Schnepf and the Friends of Blood Run are pushing for development of an archival and research center. Their efforts are supported by former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad.
