Sioux Falls, SD – This Saturday, December 14th, Project Warm-Up will hold its 19th Annual Blanket Making Event at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. This community tradition brings people of all ages together to create fleece-tied blankets for children and families in need.
This year, Project Warm-Up celebrates a significant milestone of distributing 40,000 blankets over 18 years. What began in 2006 as a Lincoln High School Key Club project to create a few blankets for homeless children during the holidays has grown into a year-round charity, partnering with schools and non-profits in the community to provide warmth and comfort to those in need. Despite this impressive accomplishment, the organization is facing a critical shortfall as requests far exceed current resources. “Requests for over 1,600 blankets have poured in this year, but we currently have just over 375 ready to distribute,” said Dr. Tracy Vik, Project Warm-Up Coordinator. “The need is greater than ever, and we are calling on the community to help us bridge the gap.”
The organization is urgently seeking monetary donations, materials such as fleece fabric, or new fleece tie blankets to meet this year’s demand. “Every blanket represents more than just warmth. It’s a symbol of care and community,” added Vik. “By coming together, we can ensure no one in need is left without comfort this winter.”
Donations can be made via Venmo (@gotfleece) or dropped off at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary. More information can be found at http://www.projectwarmup.org/. Please join us
