WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A U.S. federal judge ruled Friday that the Trump administration must halt efforts to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington issued a preliminary injunction, ordering the administration to reinstate and preserve agency contracts, retain data, and protect agency employees’ ability to perform legally required work. The administration had been sued by a federal employee union, challenging what it said were sweeping efforts to lay off huge amounts of agency staff and effectively eradicate the watchdog.
Jackson also directed the CFPB to provide office space for agency employees or permission to work remotely, and to maintain a hotline for consumer complaints.
