ABERDEEN, SD (KELO.com) — The South Dakota Board of Education Standards is beginning the process of hearing from the public on proposed content standards for K-12 Schools. Monday’s hearing in Aberdeen is the first of four that will be held during the current school year. Education Secretary Joe Graves answered criticism that proposed standards dealing with Oceti Sakowin, or Native American understandings are not mandated.
Secretary Graves also told the board that efforts to move to the Science of Reading approach of teaching English Language Arts are well-funded.
In addition to the English Language Arts and Oceti Sakowin Understandings, the Board is also working on Kindergarten through 8th Grade computer standards. The Board expects to take final action on the standards within the coming year.
