VERMILLION, SD (KELO.com) — Senator Mike Rounds is pushing to put Artificial Intelligence to work on preparing for future pandemics. Students at the Sanford/USD Med school in Vermillion are right there with him, at the forefront of developing new tools to face those challenges. Med School Dean, Dr. Tim Ridgway says the technology has limitless potential – especially in rural areas like South Dakota.
Dr. Ridgway says Artificial Intelligence could also make a huge difference in diagnosing things like cancer.
But, for all of the promise AI holds in diagnosing illnesses, Dr. Ridgway says there are also concerns.
The Medical School’s primary mission focuses on improving medical care in remote, rural settings like South Dakota. Dr. Ridgway says AI is “just what the doctor ordered” for accomplishing that mission.
Dr. Ridgway says an important key is to always view AI as a tool. It isn’t infallible, but it is valuable in improving the medical treatment landscape for the future.
