PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — South Dakota Legislators are reviewing ideas to fine-tune the state’s newly-adopted medical marijuana laws. One concern raised in hearings is how to deal with patients who have a criminal record, which often includes substance abuse. Corrections Secretary Kelly Wasko voiced her support for provisions that prevents probationers and parolees from abusing the system.
Dr. Francine Arneson of Sioux Falls questions the ethics of singling out former offenders, saying the medical process already includes safeguards to prevent abuse.
Secretary Wasko says the physician attestation process is intended to confirm that medical marijuana is the best treatment for offenders dealing with medical issues.
