RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – The leadership of Germany’s ruling Social Democrats will meet on Tuesday evening to discuss whether Olaf Scholz should still run as the party’s candidate for chancellor in the upcoming snap election, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters, confirming reports in German media.
An SPD spokeswoman said, however, that media references to an emergency meeting were false, adding SPD deputy leaders were simply holding a regular telephone conference on the organisation of the election campaign.
The meeting, if confirmed, comes amid growing calls within the SPD for Scholz to step aside as candidate in favour of his more popular Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.
