PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Still no word on whether South Dakota Tribes will accept the state’s offer to training tribal law officers – but the offer stands. Governor Noem’s office has worked to provide the funding needed to train up to 48 officers. Attorney General Marty Jackley’s office says at least a few of the state’s tribes have contacted the state inquiring about the training. The Attorney General has made arrangements to handle the extra trainees. Part of those arrangements include potential use of the new law enforcement training center that just opened in Sioux Falls.
States of emergency have been declared on reservations due to an alarming increase in crime, with a shortage of law enforcement officers cited as part of the problem.
